September 11 – October 23, 2011

In January 1999, PS projectspace started in the living room of artist and founder Jan van der Ploeg. After more than 12 years of exhibitions organized at home, the project space moves to the studio building of Jan van der Ploeg at the Madurastraat 72, in the East part of Amsterdam. This popular neighborhood is experiencing a development from a the former working-class area to a vivid openminded district. There is an infectious energy which attracts young people to the old neighborhood which creates a more mixed audience. Gradually new initiatives and artists establish themselves at various places in this part of town. And so PS goes along in this development with the new space at the Madurastraat opening on the 11th of September.

The goal of PS was to show the work of foreign colleagues to introduce artists to the Amsterdam public. Initially it concerned therefore only work by international artists such as Paul Morrison (GB), Emmanuelle Antille (CH), DJ Simpson (GB), Julian Dashper (NZ), Michelle Grabner (USA), Karina Bisch (FR), Gerwald Rockenschaub (AT), Terry Haggerty (GB), Gerold Miller (D), Tove Storch (DK), Heimo Zobernig (AT), Michael Ceulers (B). In recent years the emphasis shifted and more Dutch artists were included in the programme, among which the recent exhibition of Rob Scholte.

PS will start the new season with the exhibition UNLIT by the Dutch artist Frank Ammerlaan (1979). UNLIT is the first solo exhibition of the artist and will consist of a series of recent large paintings, sculpture and photography. The paintings have a dark skin that consists of introvert and alluring colors. In this texture are both painted geometric constructions and sewn forms with thread. Ammerlaan is interested in structures of power and greatness: human impact and a natural addition to physical and mental confined spaces or the hierarchy between cultures and religion. The exhibition UNLIT shows the opportunity to inflammation, it shows the palpable energy before a visually observable experience.

Frank Ammerlaan graduated in 2007 from the Gerrit Rietveld Academy in Amsterdam where he was awarded the Gerrit Rietveld Academy Award for Painting. Since 2010 he is doing his Masters at the Royal College of Art in London. Frank Ammerlaan is co-initiator of the exhibition spaces Horse Move Project Space and the Service Garage.

May 10 – September 25 2011

The first special exhibition of the Daimler Art Collection to be held in the Mercedes-Benz Museum (built by UN Studio), which first opened its doors in 2006, showcases key exhibits from the collection as well as new work commissioned by renowned international artists in various thematic stages – integrated into the company’s history on a floor area of 16,500 m².

The exhibition will also include numerous works created as studies of the models and design of Mercedes-Benz vehicles, thereby entering into an artistic dialog with the history of Mercedes-Benz automobiles. These include the legendary CARS series by Andy Warhol, originally designed by the pop art icon 25 years ago for the 100th anniversary of the automobile.

In addition to further works with automotive ties including pieces by Bertrand Lavier, Robert Longo and Vincent Szarek, as well as new commissioned works by Sylvie Fleury, Nic Hess, Philippe Parreno and Michael Sailstorfer will be on display for the first time at the Mercedes-Benz Museum.

A separate exhibition area of 600 m² will present the key thematic areas of the collection: The exhibition ranges from classics of Constructive and Concrete art from the Southern Germany to videos and photography by international contemporaries. Around 250 pieces by about 120 international artists will be on exhibit.

This exhibition, hitherto the most comprehensive presentation of the Daimler Art Colllection, will be accompanied by a comprehensive supporting and educational program. Special publications such as an essay on the “Stages of Modern Art in Stuttgart 1986 – 2011″ and the “ABC of the Daimler Art Collection for Students” are being designed for the exhibition. In addition to this work book for high school and college students, there will also be an accompanying book with training programs for teachers.

Installation view.

February 25 – March 26, 2011

Geometrical art takes on many forms and meanings. Sometimes a geometrical work of art is well defined in space, primarily the sculptures which originated within the sphere of minimal art. They possess an almost authoritarian, monolithic quality and relating to if not actually defining the space they’re in.

The paintings by Jan van der Ploeg (1959, Netherlands) are not concerned with finite composition and can be thought of as parts of a never-ending whole. Also the new, elongated horizontal paintings by Van der Ploeg show no personal handwriting, no pictorial ‘signature’, no gestural traces. These paintings want to be statements of facts, not the expression of emotions. They consist of elementary forms like the triangle or the parallelogram which are for instance presented in horizontal ‘lines’ covering the whole canvas from left to right and from top to bottom. These forms are alternately presented in a colour (black or blue) and white. The fact that all the lines start with an extreme part of the basic form emphasizes the notion that what we see is not a finite composition but rather part of a larger, possibly infinite whole that far exceeds the canvas. On this theme many variations are conceivable which ‘may or may not be executed’, to borrow a phrase from Sol LeWitt.

The optical results are such that we can’t perceive the whole painting in one glance, one has to focus on the different parts to understand the structure that is offered. Moreover, as static as they are, the paintings tend to suggest constant movement to the eye and when one looks at them for a period of time the image blurs and becomes one undulating, rhythmically moving whole. The sense of self, the clear boundaries between subject and object seem to dissolve and lose their meaning. Mirroring both microscopic and macroscopic worlds these paintings are literally uni-versal.

Geometrical art works ‘refer only to themselves’. The expression illustrates the degree to which these artworks are (or aspired to be) independent of hierarchical values in the rest of the world. In All systems go!, Gerold Miller (1961, DE), Heimo Zobernig (1958, AU) and Beat Zoderer (1955, CH) each show one piece of an almost ‘monolithic’ quality.

Jan van der Ploeg recently had solo exhibitions, including exhibitions at Hammer Museum, Los Angeles; Minus Space, New York; The Suburban, Chicago; SNO, Sydney; Waikato Museum of Art and History, Hamilton, New Zealand; CCNOA, Brussels; Museum Boijmans van Beuningen, Rotterdam and Gemeentemuseum, Den Haag. He participates in numerous international and national group exhibitions at Aschenbach & Hofland Galleries, Amsterdam; Hamisch McKay Gallery, Wellington, New Zealand; Sarah Cottier Gallery, Sydney en West, Den Haag and permanent work is to be seen at the Ministry of Finance in Den Haag, among other places.

Gerold Miller shows his work at Mehdi Chouakri, Berlin and Galerie Krobath, Vienna, et cetera. Heimo Zobernig is represented by Galerie Micheline Szwajcer, Antwerp and was part of Documenta, Kassel in 1992, 1997 and 2002. The work of Beat Zoderer forms part of collections such as those of Museum für Koncrete kunst, Inglostad and Museum Ritter in Waldenbuch among others.

Especially for West, Jan van der Ploeg will produce a permanent wall painting in the staircase. The exhibition will be accompanied by a new publication with a text by art critic Philip Peters.

How does the most recent generation of Dutch painters relate to the tradition – now stretching back a hundred years – of abstract painting? Can they make this idiom – rendered powerful and unambiguous by its clear forms and long history – their own, so that viewers find something in them other than repetition? Marius Lut, Jan van der Ploeg, Esther Tielemans and Evi Vingerling demonstrate that they are indeed capable of responding to abstraction. Each, in his or her own way, offers a riposte to abstract art.

Billy Gruner, Punk Painting – Sound Installation, 2010

October 15 – November 7, 2010

Curated by Billy Gruner of SNO in Sydney, Jan van der Ploeg of PS in Amsterdam and Tilman of CCNOA in Brussels.

UND 6 – INTERCONTINENTAL is a group show of international artists exhibiting at Schwartz Gallery working within what could broadly be described as non-objective contemporary art. Organised by artists-curators Tilman, Jan Van der Ploeg and Billy Gruner, it is an annual event that at its root remains an experimental developmental project; a yearly opportunity for convergence for related artists to present and view new work out of a greater array of activity. That activity may fall under the banner of Presentational Art (US), Super Formalism or Minimal Pop (EU) or, as it is defined in Australia, Post Formalism. The UND 6 INTERCONTINENTAL show has been coordinated by Tilman, Jan van der Ploeg and Billy Gruner working from the artist-run spaces they have established within a broad network. These include CCNOA in Brussels, PS in Amsterdam and SNO in Sydney respectively. Artists will have participated by presenting new work that they have themselves selected. This artist-driven approach taking place across a diverse and multiple network of artists engages traction with other interested artists, gallerists and collectors, outside of conventional systems.

Participating Artists:
Billy Gruner, Adrian Macdonald, Kyle Jenkins, Sarah Keighery, Andrew Leslie, Rachel Park, John Adair, Judith Duquemin, Justin Andrews, Ruark Lewis, Giles Ryder, Suzie Idiens, Lynne Eastaway, Sophia Egarchos, Jan van der Ploeg, Frank Ammerlaan, Marita Fraser, Michelle Grabner, Terry Haggerty, Alex Lawler , Geoff Lucas, Paul Morrison, Sean Shanahan,DJ Simpson, Tilman, Sebastian Wickeroth, Clemens Hollerer, Greet Billet, Ward Denys, Colombe Marcasiano, Ingrid Maria Sinibaldi,Tom Benson, Michael Duffy, Alma Tischler-Wood

Jan van der Ploeg: BIG CALM, 2010
Installation view with painting & wall painting

September 18 – October 16, 2010

MINUS SPACE is very excited to announce the solo exhibition Jan van der Ploeg: BIG CALM. This is the Amsterdam-based artist’s second exhibition with the gallery and it will feature a site-specific painting installation.

For his exhibition, Jan will present two new acrylic on linen paintings featuring intricate black and white patterns. The patterns are informed by a number of diverse sources, including Maori weavings, Islamic ceramic tiles, Portuguese azulejos, and Italian architectural marble designs, among others. The paintings will be installed directly on top of an ambitious floor-to-ceiling wall painting covering all four walls of the gallery. The wall painting will consist of narrow vertical red, green, and blue stripes that repeat at regular intervals throughout the space. We will also have available a new limited-edition print by the artist (Untitled, 2010, silkscreen on paper, 50 x 40 cm, edition of 25) as part of his exhibition.

About Jan’s work, artist, curator and writer Michelle Grabner states, “…his paintings expand the best of contemporary non-objective work in their shear boldness and fearless scope, the entirety of the painting’s dynamics are always greater than the architecture that supports them…The impact of van der Ploeg’s paintings is located at the intersection of sensation and thought, between the work’s graphic visual impact and its conceptual underpinnings. His paintings are welcomingly antagonistic to narrative. Signifying instead a powerful commitment to the commingling of the familiar, new and strange potentials of color and form.”

Over the past two decades, Jan van der Ploeg (b. 1959) has exhibited his work extensively in both solo and group exhibitions in Europe, North America, Asia, Australia, and New Zealand, including at venues such as The Suburban (Chicago), Smart Museum (Chicago), Gallery Sonja Roesch (Houston), Hammer Museum (Los Angeles), Gemeentemuseum (The Hague), Van Abbemuseum (Eindhoven), Galerie Asim Chugthai (Berlin), Konsortium (Dusseldorf), Centre d’Art Neuchatel (France), Center for Contemporary Non-Objective Art (Brussels), Sarah Cottier Gallery (Sydney), Goddard de Fiddes Gallery (Perth), and Hamish McKay Gallery (Wellington).

Jan’s first solo exhibition at MINUS SPACE in 2006 was the gallery’s inaugural exhibition. His work was also included in our recent group exhibition MINUS SPACE, curated by Phong Bui, at P.S.1 Contemporary Art Center in New York in 2008-2009.

In addition to his artistic work, Jan founded and directs PS, a highly-regarded exhibition space and program based in Amsterdam. Committed to new abstract and conceptual art, PS aims to provide a platform for the work of upcoming international artists in an environment that exists between the conventions of an artist-run space and a commercial gallery.

SUPPORT
Jan van der Ploeg: BIG CALM is generously supported by the Mondriaan Foundation, Amsterdam. MINUS SPACE’s programming is made possible by the support of The Golden Rule Foundation, as well as individual donors. We thank you!

Julian Dashper in New Caledonia, July 2008

August 7 – September 4, 2010

MINUS SPACE is honored to announce the memorial exhibition Julian Dashper (1960-2009): It Is Life. The exhibition marks the one-year anniversary of the New Zealand artist’s death and it will feature a single work by Julian entitled Future Call, as well as written tributes to him by more than 70 artists internationally.

Julian Dashper is one of the most significant reductive artists of his generation. He was one of MINUS SPACE’s earliest international collaborators and supporters, starting around the time of our inception in 2003. Julian has had a core presence in our project ever since. Renowned for his generosity to others, he was highly esteemed both as an artist and individual, and is dearly missed by his family, friends, and the community of artists. As evident in the written tributes to him by artists to be included in the exhibition, Julian’s practice extended well beyond the walls of his studio. He was a “husband, father, friend, partner, collaborator, teacher, mentor, and advocate”. His life and work directly impacted hundreds of artists and others around the globe. His influence and legacy will continue for many years to come.

For Julian Dashper (1960-2009): It Is Life, MINUS SPACE will present Julian’s work Future Call consisting of a single telephone installed in the gallery that is periodically called from New Zealand, which is 16 hours ahead of New York City, only to be left ringing and unanswered. Traditionally completed by Julian, Future Call will be performed throughout the exhibition by Julian’s wife, artist Marie Shannon.

In addition, more than 70 artists and other individuals from around the globe contributed texts to the exhibition, including personal notes, memories, anecdotes, criticism, correspondence, poems, and elegies:

Soledad Arias, Marcus Bering, Channa Boon, Ralf Brög, Henry Brown & Millicent Borges Accardi, Mary-Louise Browne, Vicente Butron, Melanie Crader & Mick Johnson, Christoph Dahlhausen, Kasarian Dane, Judy Darragh & Rosanna Albertini, Christopher Dean, Matthew Deleget & Rossana Martinez, Ali Duffey, Daniel Feingold, Linda Francis, Alicia Frankovich, Zipora Fried, Andrea Gaskin, Daniel Göttin & Gerda Maise, Michelle Grabner, Billy Gruner & Sarah Keighery, Vaughan Gunson, Jenny Halliday, Lynne Harlow, Miriam Harris, Gilbert Hsiao, William Hsu, Simon Ingram, Kyle Jenkins, Ian Jervis, Jeffrey Cortland Jones, James Juszczyk, Steve Karlik, Mark Kirby, WJM Kok, Keira Kotler, Elodie Lesourd, Stephen Little, Joshua Lux, MariaMaria, Jackie Meier, Moreno Miorelli, Dane Mitchell, Victoria Munro, Geoff Newton, John Nixon, Rose Nolan, Salvatore Panatteri, Carrie Patterson, Nathan Pohio, Gwynneth Porter, Mel Prest, Linda Roche, Layla Rudneva-Mackay, Rene Rusjan, Erik Saxon, Karen Schifano, Marie Shannon, Sandra Smith, Barbara Strathdee, Clary Stolte, Robert Swain, David Thomas, Mandy Thomsett-Taylor, Tilman, Jan van der Ploeg, Machiel van Soest, Erica van Zon, Jan Maarten Voskuil, Isha Welsh, Marcus Williams, Emi Winter, Rachael Wren, Patricia Zarate, and others.

Fittingly, Julian Dashper was born on February 29, 1960 (leap year day). During his career, he mounted more than 140 solo exhibitions of his work worldwide, including in New Zealand, Australia, Asia, Europe, and the United States. In 2001, he was awarded a Fulbright Fellowship to be an artist in residence at the Chinati Foundation in Marfa, TX. A 25-year retrospective of Julian’s work, entitled Midwestern Unlike You and Me, curated by Christopher Cook and David Raskin, traveled the United States during 2005-2006, making stops at the Sioux City Art Center, IA; Sheldon Memorial Art Gallery, NE; and Ulrich Museum of Art, KS. Julian’s work was included in our comprehensive group exhibition MINUS SPACE at P.S.1 Contemporary Art Center in NYC in 2008-2009. Julian died on July 30, 2009, and is survived by his wife Marie Shannon and their teenage son Leo.

SUPPORT
We would like to thank artists Marie Shannon, Victoria Munro, and Jan van der Ploeg for their tremendous assistance in organizing this exhibition. We would also like to thank all of the artists who contributed heartfelt texts to the show.
