June 11 – July 30, 2011

Hebel _121 is delighted to present New York based artist Andrew Huston for the first time with a site specific installation .

Continuing his interest with reflective materials and mirrors, Huston has installed curtain walls of aluminum leaf on fabric mesh, a floor to ceiling installation of receding panels that occupy the central space of the gallery. The metal leaf gilded on to an open weave fabric creates a transparent and perceptual environment that is both metaphorical and optical.

With an ephemeral quality thanks to its lightness and silver hues, the installation makes for a physical experience, as accentuated by prosaic materials such as gauze, aluminum and copper/zinc. The viewer is invited to walk between the curtains to experience the weight of the surrounding space.

Atsuo Hukuda has shown his Color and Monochrome paintings at Hebel_121 for the first time in 2005, together with Kenzo Onoda, a light and performance artist also from Japan. Atsuo Hukuda has been producing his Color and Monochrome works since 1990. In his one man show at Hebel_121, he will present a new development in his work.

Atsuo Hukuda is engaged in bringing together old traditional Japanese painting with his own chosen contemporary idea of painting. Old and new work have the same importance for him, and he does not make any difference. He is choosing gold foil as one of the antique colors of Japan, and together with the transparent color of his own choice, which is changing its appearance as time goes by, he is creating works of reflection and transparency.

January 8 – March 5, 2011

In the ‘front space,’ John Nixon has installed a selection of his works from three decades of the EXPERIMENTAL PAINTING WORKSHOP, EPW: 1980-2010. As he lives in Australia and travels internationally, works are often made in situ using local materials in the days before the opening. At Hebel_121 works produced in different cities over a period of years are brought together for the exhibition. Each exhibition is specific to the size and architecture of the museum or gallery space. The exhibition as such provides a focal point for discussion about art and the possibilities for painting today.

In the ‘back space,’ Justin Andrews presents his black and white photographs of PROJECTIONS on his studio wall. The photographed projections are of random configurations in cut paper, enlarged via an overhead projector. A number of photographs have been layered in each image. The end result is a highly complex image that acts as a record of a number of instantaneous events….a compression of split-second timeframes. A composition in height, width, depth and time.
