Daniel Göttin, Skizze Anne Mosseri-Marlio Galerie Zurich, 2011

June 10 – July 16, 2011

Anne Mosseri-Marlio Galerie is very pleased to present paintings, objects and installation works of
the past 20 years in Daniel Göttin’s (wel)come back exhibition to Switzerland entitled Concrete
Relations. After traveling and punctuating landscapes and exhibition spaces from the United States,
Japan and Australia to Basel’s neighboring Hégenheim (FR), it seems timely to return to Zurich 10
years after his 2001 solo exhibition The Go Between, in the Haus für konstruktive und konkrete
Kunst, Zürich, now known as Haus Konstruktiv.

Images of the landscape surrounding Marfa, Texas and Donald Judd’s work at the Chinati
Foundation, spurred the Basel native to apply for a 6 months residency and subsequently travel to
Marfa in 1993. He has returned regularly to visit, work and exhibit. Göttin is known for his site-
specific installations and interventions as well as for his floor and wall objects and paintings.

Göttin’s in-depth knowledge of space, proportions and colors are expressed in his architectural
interventions (Networks and Lightcatchers), objects, prints and paintings. Galvanized iron, mdf,
aluminium, tape from all over the world are his preferred materials. By using industrial materials as
his base, he is dependent on matching his technical skills and aesthetics with machine made primary
resources to touch our senses. Light vibrates off the paintings in pink, blue, grey and yellow while
the high polished colored ones in yellow, blue, opal and green project into the space. Objects
leaning against walls or on the floor invite the viewer to look at them and the surrounding space they
are using, the shadows they cast and the reflections. Impeccable gloss and metal combine well to
create the viewer’s portrait.

While limiting himself to readily available materials, he creates new environments within the given
space. The use of tape to bring out the features of the existing architecture creates concise and
precise accents in space. For the exhibition Concrete Relations Göttin integrates the window facade
and inner columns of the gallery in the exhibit. His consciousness of material properties, the interior
and exterior environment lead to playful emphasis on background and foreground. Within each
setting, he can choose to combine his Network Interventions with objects or paintings or simply
present lines with clarity, transparency and the essence of purity.

A retrospective of paintings shows the evolution of monochromes: divided with stripes, pure
monochromes and network lines building a strong force.

After completing the School of Visual Art (Schule für Gestaltung), Basel in 1989 he was granted
residencies at the renown Chinati Foundation, Marfa, Texas, Youkobo Art Space, Tokyo,
the:artist:network, New York (CMS/iaab) and Fremantle: Artist Residency (CMS/iaab). Some of his
installations in Australia, Japan, the United States, Germany, The Netherlands, France and
Switzerland can still be seen in public and private places. His works have been regularly exhibited at
Gallery Goddard de Fiddes, Perth, Conny Dietzschold Gallery and SNO, Sydney, AU; Gallery Gen,
Tokyo, JP; Galerie Florian Trampler, Munich, DE; NOS, Tulette, FR, CCNOA, BE; PS, Amsterdam,
NL; Minus Space, New York, US; Hebel_121, Basel, Switzerland and in several art project spaces
in other countries.

With his partner Gerda Maise he runs Hebel_121, Basel, which features individual and group shows
of international artists.

April 21 – May 14, 2011

Since 1990, Daniel Göttin has been examining the interaction between material, space, and visual appearance. He has conceived and developed his space installations according to the information that the given spatial situation offers. His interest is in the equal dialogue between the already existing and a specific intervention. This makes the space and his intervention visible and perceptible as a new temporary unit in time.

For these temporary installations Göttin uses common industrial materials and products. His mode of practice likes to call the attention to the subjective character of perception. The interaction between his specific intervention and the environment allows an experience of a newly defined perception of space.

Daniel Göttin, White/Silver/White, 2008
Acrylic on aluminum
8 x 32 inches

January 13 – February 26, 2011

After the exhibition “Objekte und Tafeln” in 2007 and numerous shows and installation projects that Daniel Göttin had mainly in Japan and Australia, I am glad to be able to show him for the second time with “Objekte und Tafeln II”, this time in my new location at Maximilianstrasse in Munich, from 13. january through 26. february 2011. Out of a multitude of pieces and possibilities we decided on showing only recent works created exclusively for the inner space. These works consist of partly painted objects and panels, whose base materials and elements are industrially produced: metal sheets, beams, also called semi-finished products, not yet destined to a final usage or shape, free of any significance. The use of these industrial semi-finished products allows the conception of works whose configuration is readily traceable and makes them exist as self-contained objects. Frequently these pieces get created in series with similar yet changing themes. The choice of shape, colour and the relationship between painted and non-painted segments of the carrier determine the character of the piece. The unpainted eloxided aluminum reflects and collects light and continually changes the character of the work of art.

As concrete objects and panels they occupy in their implicitness a determinate room in space and marry discretely with the environment.

Next to the genuine pieces of art on the walls we are glad to present you with documentations of further space and environment related works and projects (architecture related art, temporary installations inside as well as outside and murals) that will give you a further glimpse into the enormous variety of the minimalistic formal vocabulary of Daniel Göttin.

Julian Dashper in New Caledonia, July 2008

August 7 – September 4, 2010

MINUS SPACE is honored to announce the memorial exhibition Julian Dashper (1960-2009): It Is Life. The exhibition marks the one-year anniversary of the New Zealand artist’s death and it will feature a single work by Julian entitled Future Call, as well as written tributes to him by more than 70 artists internationally.

Julian Dashper is one of the most significant reductive artists of his generation. He was one of MINUS SPACE’s earliest international collaborators and supporters, starting around the time of our inception in 2003. Julian has had a core presence in our project ever since. Renowned for his generosity to others, he was highly esteemed both as an artist and individual, and is dearly missed by his family, friends, and the community of artists. As evident in the written tributes to him by artists to be included in the exhibition, Julian’s practice extended well beyond the walls of his studio. He was a “husband, father, friend, partner, collaborator, teacher, mentor, and advocate”. His life and work directly impacted hundreds of artists and others around the globe. His influence and legacy will continue for many years to come.

For Julian Dashper (1960-2009): It Is Life, MINUS SPACE will present Julian’s work Future Call consisting of a single telephone installed in the gallery that is periodically called from New Zealand, which is 16 hours ahead of New York City, only to be left ringing and unanswered. Traditionally completed by Julian, Future Call will be performed throughout the exhibition by Julian’s wife, artist Marie Shannon.

In addition, more than 70 artists and other individuals from around the globe contributed texts to the exhibition, including personal notes, memories, anecdotes, criticism, correspondence, poems, and elegies:

Soledad Arias, Marcus Bering, Channa Boon, Ralf Brög, Henry Brown & Millicent Borges Accardi, Mary-Louise Browne, Vicente Butron, Melanie Crader & Mick Johnson, Christoph Dahlhausen, Kasarian Dane, Judy Darragh & Rosanna Albertini, Christopher Dean, Matthew Deleget & Rossana Martinez, Ali Duffey, Daniel Feingold, Linda Francis, Alicia Frankovich, Zipora Fried, Andrea Gaskin, Daniel Göttin & Gerda Maise, Michelle Grabner, Billy Gruner & Sarah Keighery, Vaughan Gunson, Jenny Halliday, Lynne Harlow, Miriam Harris, Gilbert Hsiao, William Hsu, Simon Ingram, Kyle Jenkins, Ian Jervis, Jeffrey Cortland Jones, James Juszczyk, Steve Karlik, Mark Kirby, WJM Kok, Keira Kotler, Elodie Lesourd, Stephen Little, Joshua Lux, MariaMaria, Jackie Meier, Moreno Miorelli, Dane Mitchell, Victoria Munro, Geoff Newton, John Nixon, Rose Nolan, Salvatore Panatteri, Carrie Patterson, Nathan Pohio, Gwynneth Porter, Mel Prest, Linda Roche, Layla Rudneva-Mackay, Rene Rusjan, Erik Saxon, Karen Schifano, Marie Shannon, Sandra Smith, Barbara Strathdee, Clary Stolte, Robert Swain, David Thomas, Mandy Thomsett-Taylor, Tilman, Jan van der Ploeg, Machiel van Soest, Erica van Zon, Jan Maarten Voskuil, Isha Welsh, Marcus Williams, Emi Winter, Rachael Wren, Patricia Zarate, and others.

Fittingly, Julian Dashper was born on February 29, 1960 (leap year day). During his career, he mounted more than 140 solo exhibitions of his work worldwide, including in New Zealand, Australia, Asia, Europe, and the United States. In 2001, he was awarded a Fulbright Fellowship to be an artist in residence at the Chinati Foundation in Marfa, TX. A 25-year retrospective of Julian’s work, entitled Midwestern Unlike You and Me, curated by Christopher Cook and David Raskin, traveled the United States during 2005-2006, making stops at the Sioux City Art Center, IA; Sheldon Memorial Art Gallery, NE; and Ulrich Museum of Art, KS. Julian’s work was included in our comprehensive group exhibition MINUS SPACE at P.S.1 Contemporary Art Center in NYC in 2008-2009. Julian died on July 30, 2009, and is survived by his wife Marie Shannon and their teenage son Leo.

SUPPORT
We would like to thank artists Marie Shannon, Victoria Munro, and Jan van der Ploeg for their tremendous assistance in organizing this exhibition. We would also like to thank all of the artists who contributed heartfelt texts to the show.
Daniel Göttin, Installation Proposal for MINUS SPACE, 2010

February 6 – March 13, 2010

MINUS SPACE is delighted to announce a new immersive installation by Basel, Switzerland-based artist Daniel Göttin entitled Network 45 with Signs. For the past 20 years, Göttin has focused on making temporary, site-specific interventions that examine the subjective nature of perception. His installations, always consisting of common industrial materials, such as tape, carpet, and paint, playfully respond to the specific characteristics of an architectural site and activate the viewer’s relationship to it.

For Network 45 with Signs, Göttin will create a black tape wall installation throughout the entire gallery. At select intervals throughout his installation, he will also install a series of abstract “signs” made of aluminum foil on laminated cardboard, which were informed and inspired by his recent residency in Manhattan’s Chinatown.

Daniel Göttin has mounted nearly 60 solo exhibitions and projects since 1990 at museums, galleries, and non-profits worldwide, including throughout Europe, Japan, Australia, and the United States. His work has been presented, commissioned, collected, and written about widely over the past 20 years. In addition to his artistic work, Göttin, along with his partner, artist Gerda Maise, also directs Hebel_121, an experimental exhibition space in Basel, Switzerland.

Daniel Göttin’s installation Network 42 (2008) is also still on view in the café at P.S.1 Contemporary Art Center / A Museum of Modern Art Affiliate in Long Island City, NY. It was originally created for the exhibition MINUS SPACE, curated by Phong Bui, which was on view at the museum from October 2008 – May 2009.

SUPPORT
The exhibition Daniel Göttin: Network 45 with Signs is supported by Abteilung Kultur, Basel, Switzerland. MINUS SPACE’s programming is made possible by the generous support of The Golden Rule Foundation, as well as individual donors. We thank you!

Daniel Göttin, Transformer 2, 2008

After 2step, minimalpop, Painted Objects, Double Exposure, A Bit O’ White, My Eyes Keep Me In Trouble, Yo, Mo’ Modernism, With Your Eyes Only, COMPOSITE VISIONS is the ninth touring group exhibition organized by CCNOA, Brussels, Belgium.

Since its last theoretical stance as a sublime yet powerful art form, creating a new -ism and ironically also stating the end not only of painting but possibly also of visual art in general, and of its intellectual process, the idea of the ‘reductive’ itself has made an impressive return. Traces of the idea of the ‘reductive’ and similar approaches to art-making can be found in many artistic oeuvres which have come into the limelight since the overpowering postmodern related statements by artists and critics in the late 80’s, and the aesthetics of the ‘reductive’, nonobjective and concrete are now a subject of reflection in contemporary art practices, re-emerging from an imposed quasi non-existence.

In this state of relative non-recognition within the discourse and debate around art and culture in general, the subject of the ‘reductive’ as a possible antithesis to the overpowering reintroduction of representational painting and at the same time to the emergence of the focus on new media, technology and photography, has regained considerable strength over the last decade within an international frame of cultural production and commerce, as well as through the firmly held lone positions of artists like Mosset, Charlton, Armleder, Morellet, Palermo and others throughout the 80’s and 90’s.

Having seemingly recovered from the harsh critical overtones after almost being eliminated from contemporary discourse, in which a retroactive and purely commercial tone took over, the ideas and strategies of the ‘reductive’ and ‘essential’ have slowly found their way back into artistic language and practice. Yet, due to the visual superimpositions of present times, artists have started to shy away from the rigid limitations of -isms related to the ‘non-objective’ or ‘reductive’ and have embedded existing ideas, confluence of styles and approaches into the contemporary world, the here and now, mingling with popular culture as well as branching out of the studio practice inherent in painting as we know it and as the majority still likes to understand it.

Crossovers with other forms of art, like pop art, installation, and new media, play a major role in this new understanding of art-making in the realm of the ‘reductive’ and in its breaking out of its claimed territory with excursions into new planes of understanding, confronting the remarkable stakes which are on offer within the perimeter of ‘reductive’ art production today.

COMPOSITE VISIONS is triggered by the multitude of influences entering the thinking, thought process and practices of an array of like-minded contemporary artists from around the globe working within the fascinating and resilient discourse surrounding the historical, formal and contemporary explorations within the field of the ‘reductive’ in general and ‘reductive’ painting in particular.

Organized by the Brussels-based CCNOA COMPOSITE VISIONS comprises the work of 16 international artists and aims to give a modest inside overview of the possibilities within this broad approach. This type of exhibition is never able to display the entire palette of diversity; CCNOA’s objective is simply to document some of the thinking around this subject.

Participating Artists:
Kjell Bjorgeengen, Julian Dashper, Delphine Deguislage, Edith Dekyndt, Daniel Gottin, Clemens Hollerer, Camila Oliveira-Fairclough, Ingrid Maria Sinibaldi, Michael Skoda, Tilman, Alan Uglow, Jan van der Ploeg, Dan Walsh, Lars Wolter, Carrie Yamaoka, Beat Zoderer

Our third VIEWLIST exhibition is conceived by New York painter Karen Schifano.

The word “inspire” (originally meaning “to infuse with breath”) is a verb, but can also transform itself into a noun or adjective. It’s very active, and yet also implies being receptive, even demands openness, a readiness to receive, and a sharpening of perception and awareness. From one thing, there is a direct connection to another thing, a kind of touch that is nurturing, rich and full of promise. Potential becomes realization; we wake up rejuvenated, re-energized, and ready for action.

This group of inspirational flotsam and jetsam from our homes and studios is incredibly varied, running the gamut from a poetic quote to the restoration of a house, from the image of a computer desktop to strips of colored tape on a wall. In some instances, there’s a surprising leap from the image seen here to the finished work, in others there is a clear and recognizable relationship. I hope that as you are intrigued by an image, you will click on it to reveal the caption or thoughts of the artist, and then go to the individual websites linked to each name. Through a dialogue about how the mysterious process of getting from A to B or even Z unfolds for each of us, new avenues of search can open up, and we can be re-inspired by this “Inspiration Information*”.

VIEWLIST is our online project space where we invite artists and others to curate a visual essay of images. VIEWLIST exhibitions are experimental and usually thematic, and can include art works spanning various time periods, movements, and geographic locations. Exhibitions may also include ideas and images from disciplines outside of the visual arts. With VIEWLIST, we’ve created a venue that focuses exclusively on ideas, a kind of idealized curatorial space, where exhibition budgets, loans and acquisitions of art works, timelines, and all other logistics are set aside.

It's the most inspirational image in my studio. Shot at an angle, it was meant to show an installation wall of small Silk Road paintings, an ongoing series of little color fields with an almost textile-like grid. Instead, as a flawed print, the image has instead provided me with a raft of ideas. See the striations where the color was running out? They suggested scrims of color, which prompted me to try something similar with my paintings, such as Silk Road 87. The more pronounced lines prompted me to see what would happen if I dug into the surface. I applied multiple layers of wax paint and then dragged a metal tool across the surface to expose some what’s underneath. An entirely new series, Vicolo, resulted. (Vicolo is Italian for alley.) I work freehand so while the result is a formal linear arrangement, it’s also quite organic—and physically engaging. Every time I look at this serendipitous little mistake, with its odd hues and funny lines, I find another way to think about what I'm doing." '><img width="150" height="150" src="http://www.minusspace.com/wp-content/uploads/2009/07/bulletinboard-mattera-150x150.jpg" class="attachment-thumbnail" alt="Joanne Mattera: "The attached jpeg shows a bad printout tacked to my studio wall. Every time I look at this serendipitous little mistake, with its odd hues and funny lines, I find another way to think about what I'm doing."" title="Joanne Mattera: "The attached jpeg shows a bad printout tacked to my studio wall. The housed was designed in 1961 by Croation architect Nino Sydney, for a mysterious Russian client and electronics collector named Dimitrieff - the sole owner to date. Importantly, this simple type of project building was in part key to the development of what is known in Australian architecture as, 'Sydney (International) Style'. Like other houses designed by Seidler or Petit and Sevitt groups at that time, it is significant because it marries regional detail with international influence and, 'aspirational' urban designing - a process long considered in regional terms, and that has had a profound impact on my current thinking about art. We are currently returning it back to its original austere modernist tone of black and white paint. We intend to use it as a gallery named L9 (the title of the house design), and our studio. Note there is a kangaroo who has been living in the grounds that face onto a severe gully and national park, he appears reasonably friendly. All of this I have been pondering regularly of late, especially when traveling and making the Collective works and the related Punk Paintings." '><img width="150" height="150" src="http://www.minusspace.com/wp-content/uploads/2009/07/bulletinboard-grunerkeighery-150x150.jpg" class="attachment-thumbnail" alt="Billy Gruner & Sarah Keighery: "This photo that sits on my desktop is of an original steel cube house that Sarah Keighery and I have managed to possess in the Blue Mountains, near Sydney.
