Installation view of paintings by Mark Dagley
June 8 – July 15, 2012
Panepinto Galleries and STUDIO 371 are pleased to present Material Tak, a group exhibition devoted exclusively to the practice of painting. One of the oldest and most revered forms of artistic output, painting is a doggedly powerful medium. Not merely as defined by its visceral exactitude or allegiance to color, but in its ability to strike at the core of who we are—to register on levels of the psyche otherwise untouched by the parlance of everyday life or pedagogical dogma. Color-intensive, gesturally avant-garde, site-specific or dealing with the confines and expansive boundaries of hard-edged geometry, the works in this show provide an optically charged tête-à-tête between the act of painting itself and the viewing audience.
Curated by Kara L. Rooney, Material Tak brings together artists from Brooklyn,
Jersey City, Newark and Manhattan as a way of examining the material concerns of paint (TAK), addressing both its tactile qualities and its ability to generate a dialogue unique to each individual’s creative register of the medium. Featured artists include Mark Dagley, Anne Sherwood Pundyk, Kati Vilim, Jsun Laliberté, and Peter Fox.
Panepinto Galleries and STUDIO 371 were founded by Stephanie Panepinto in 2011
as a collective space to host gallery exhibitions, film screenings, theatrical
performances, and photo shoots, as well as build a community of artists.
