In Memoriam: Julian Dashper (1960-2009)

dashper-inmemoriam

Dear friends,

It is with tremendous sadness that we post the passing of our dear friend and collaborator, New Zealand artist Julian Dashper (1960-2009).  Julian was one of the kindest, most generous, and optimistic individuals we’ve ever met.  MINUS SPACE brought him into our lives and we are proud to have had the opportunity to get to know and work with him, ever so briefly.

Julian is survived by his partner Marie and son Leo. We will post additional information as it becomes available.

We invite your reflections on Julian.  Please feel free to share your thoughts with the community by commenting below.

Julian, you will be so dearly missed.

With affection,
Matthew & Rossana

I was so saddened to hear that Julian had lost his battle with melanoma. He was inspiring in the way he did not let his illness defeat or define him. He was a fantastic artist and a really great mind – I enjoyed his company immensely and will miss him. With big New York hugs to Marie and Leo. I hope to see one of you wearing that hat at Grief in January… Dx

Like so many others I was greatly saddened to hear of Julian’s passing. His intellect, creativity and passion for his art, together with the kindness and generosity that he extended to those around him, rightfully earned him the greatest respect of his peers. It was truly a pleasure to have known Julian.

My own decision to go to art school and pursue a career in art followed off the back of having seen Julian’s fantastically witty exhibition ‘The Twist’, at the City Gallery some ten years ago. Quite simply, he was an inspiration.

    Julian, we will miss you.

Very sorry to hear the sad news – I travelled to Belgium to see Julian’s work and was very excited to show the images to my students on my return to the UK. We talked about the work as a rare combination of humour and seriousness, and this is how I like to think Julian would have been in person.
